Preschool Curriculum
What will we be learning in Preschool?
The Early Years Curriculum
Playing, exploring, active learning, creating and thinking critically are all essential building blocks crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning. This is also vital for building their capacity to learn to form relationships and thrive. The EYFS is based around four themes, each of which is linked to an important principle.

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum where the ‘Seven Areas of Learning and development’ are an integral part of each day. By the end of Early Years Foundation Stage, children are assessed against the Early Learning Goals. These goals cover every area of learning and state what the children should know and can do by the end of the reception year.

At Buglawton, we embrace the definitions of the ‘Characteristics of effective teaching and learning’, which we feel embodies our approach to learning.

"In the early years, children benefit from a well-thought-out curriculum that focuses on developing their language skills. This supports them to communicate and cooperate well with others. Children are curious learners."

In The Moment Planning (ITMP)
At Buglawton Primary School, we use an In the Moment Planning (ITMP) approach across our Foundation Stage to ensure learning is meaningful, responsive, and rooted in each child’s interests. Our skilled practitioners observe, interact and join children in their play, identifying teachable moments that allow us to extend thinking and scaffold learning immediately. This approach complements whole‑class, small‑group, paired and individual learning, creating a balance between structured teaching and child‑led exploration. Through ongoing observation, we shape future planning and ensure that every child’s unique curiosity and developmental needs inform the learning opportunities we provide. ITMP enables children to become engaged, motivated learners and supports our belief that young children learn best when their ideas are valued and their learning journey evolves naturally in response to them.
